My closet reorg and a funny video

Hey guys…happy Wednesday!  I hope you are all having a great day!!  So, I have an exciting update for those of you who are following my closet bet , I spent a few days totally cleaning out my closet in the hopes that I can make this last for one whole month. I ended up emptying my entire closet so there was absolutely nothing on my side, it was just easier that way.  I’m going to spare you the picture of what my bed looked like with all my clothes but the floor didn’t fare much better.

I ended up throwing out  4 large trash bags of junk, and additional 2 bags for donation, 2 bags for Erica (my SIL) and I downgraded to 27 pairs of shoes (but then added 1 more pair of running shoes when I scored a deal on the model I run in at my Turkey Trot packet pick up!)  I am kind of embarrassed with how much I had and was able to get rid of, but I think I thinned things out pretty well and Erica is thrilled that I just stocked her closet with a bunch of new threads. Here is the final result:

It’s not perfect but it was the best I could do with what I had to work with.  Please send me all your best thoughts that I can keep it this way for a month (I need all the help I can get!!)  I am off to get my Mom.  She is staying with us for the next couple of days to celebrate Thanksgiving and I’m looking forward to spending time with her and Ashton is beyond excited to see her!  I hope the snow holds off a bit so we can go get our pics with Santa done and so I can run my Turkey Trot tomorrow morning!

With that, I leave you with a really funny video from a family that puts out great parodies (if you don’t follow them, you should, they are pretty funny!)  I wish you all a very safe, happy and healthy Thanksgiving!  For those of you going out for a Turkey Trot (or just a run) tomorrow good luck and I will see you all on Friday!

Question of the day

What are your Thanksgiving plans? Are you running a Turkey Trot?

Weekly Wrap Up

Hi guys…how’s it going?  Today is my first official day of vacation and I am going to soak it up as best I can!  I have a lot on my “to do” list like sweeping and steam cleaning all the floors, cleaning the bathrooms, getting my oil changed, etc but I am building in some time for fun, like going to see a movie, getting some holiday shopping done, and playing with Ashton.  I’m going to make the best of this week off…so while I’m kicking off the new week, let’s take a look at how last week played out!

Week: 11/17-11/23

Monday:  I ran 3 miles in 24:40 (8:13 pace) and then did some planks, it felt good to run again after taking a full week off.  I do think I need to get new running shoes though, so that is on my to do list this week while I’m on vacation!

Tuesday: I was a bit tight when I woke up, mainly in my right IT band but I got in 3 decent miles in 25 flat (8:20 pace) while listening to by BRF Taylor Swift. I am really loving her new album.  I have no shame–whatever Taylor is selling, I am buying!

Wednesday:  I finally saw my favorite instructor Erin at spin class. It was another super sweaty class that challenged me and I felt great afterward.  Nothing like starting your day off with an adrenaline high!

Thursday: I did 30 minutes on the stair climber while watching the rest of the weeks SOA episode. I have a love/hate relationship with this machine, it hurts like hell but I feel great when I’m done.  At night I taught Group Power and really felt the burn from having not taught last week!

Friday: I did a nice and easy 4 miles in 37 mins (9:07 pace) while watching Grey’s Anatomy–watching my favorite shows while running makes it go by so quickly!

Saturday: I had good intentions of doing a workout, but we had soccer in the morning then decided to do our Thanksgiving shopping right after and before I kew it, it was Ashton’s naptime and I started on my closet eviction.

Sunday: We went for a family hike since it was really beautiful out and we know we don’t have that many more days like that here in MA left.

I planned to workout during Ashton’s naptime, but he asked that I take a nap with him and he has never asked for that.  At first I wanted to say no because I had a plan in my head and wanted to get my sweat on but I stopped myself and decided to lay down with him.  I took a nap with him and it was glorious!  I am trying really hard to savor these sweet moments!  After his nap we went to get his hair cut and ended up getting home much later than I anticipated because we went to ride all the rides at the mall.  Totally worth losing track of time, we had a blast!

All in all, this weeks workouts were much better than last weeks!  Now that I am home this week, my plans may change a bit but I am aiming to work out most days and I have my first Turkey Trot on Thursday morning!  I hope you all have a wonderful week!

Question of the day

How was your weekend?  Tell me the best part about it!

Vacation and a Liebster

Happy Friday!  In just a few short hours I will officially be on vacation for a week!  Can you tell I’m a bit excited? I still have that fancy schmancy event to go to tonight (and my Rent the Runway dress came in!!!) but that will be more fun than work!  So let’s get to a little fun on this fabulous Friday shall we?

My friend Mike nominated me for a Liebster Award!  I’ve done this a few times here and here but here are some new questions so you can learn even more about me! 🙂  If you haven’t met Mike, go over and visit him, he is an incredible guy!!

1. What is your current health related goal?

This is actually what I am struggling with the most right now, I don’t have a really concrete goal which is why my workouts aren’t really exciting me.  I guess my goal is always to improve my fitness and continue to stay healthy and strong but not having a short term goal is bother the heck out of me.

2. What is your biggest irrational fear?

That something terrible will happen to Ashton and he will be gone from our lives.  I’ve even had a few nightmares about it and woken up drenched in sweat, completely panicked and crying.  It’s a terrible feeling.  I worry WAY more now than I ever did before, and I used to worry a lot before!

3. Do you enjoy wrapping presents?

I actually do and am always the designated wrapper in our house and I used to help my Dad with all his wrapping as well.  I actually love wrapping gifts (just not the back aches that follow.)  I don’t get into all the bows and ribbons and stuff but being able to wrap a gift for someone and watch them open it is a great joy.  I’d rather wrap and give than receive.

4. What’s your favorite cross training activity?

At this very moment, I am going to say spinning, but you all know I love yoga a ton too!

5. If I came to visit you, what would we do?

Well, as my visitor I’d let you pick what we would do, but I’d love to go for a run with you, then maybe spend the day walking around/exploring Boston, stopping in to a cafe for a drink, eating meals at some of the incredible places here and of course talking non-stop along the way!

6. You have 2 weeks off of work and 2 round trip plane tickets to ANYWHERE. Where would you go and who would you take?

The place is harder than the who. Of course I’d pick Robyn (and because I can never follow rules, Ashton too!) I’d likely pick Australia, a few places in Asia or South Africa.  I have a lot of places on my bucket list that need at least 2 weeks to explore!

7. What’s the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you during a run or race?

I don’t have anything good for this one (yet and now I am sure I have jinxed myself). No epic falls or funny stories about how I got caught peeing in the woods.  I am a boring runner.

8. Tell me the 3 best days of your life. Or at least the first 3 that pop into your mind.

The day I married Robyn, the last day I (unknowingly) spent with my Dad and the day Ashton was born.

9. Okay, you HAVE to eat a fast food meal. What restaurant would you choose and what would you order?

I’m going with Mike here and saying Panera.  I’d order the chicken soup and Thai salad combo, I love it!  It’s the only “fast food” place I will go to.

10. Have you ever met a celebrity?

Yes, a few and spoken to quick a few of them.  One of my earlier jobs right out of college was at a client who serviced the American Express Centurion (the black card) account.  I was assigned to a bunch of really high-profile celebrities that I spoke to often on the phone.  Oh the stories I have….

11. Share a picture of yourself in non workout clothes!

I spend most of my days in regular, non-workout clothes. Unless I am lounging at home in the evenings, I actually don’t like to be in workout type attire unless I am actually working out.  Lounging in yoga pants is comfy, but it’s almost too comfy for me and I get lazy.  Yeah, yeah, I’m weird, we have already established this! 🙂

sara in car

12. If you could choose to have a ‘do-over’ and switch careers, what would you choose and why?

Hmm..I actually think I am right where I am supposed to be.  I was initially going to go to law school right out of undergrad and am SO happy I didn’t, I just don’t think that is a life I’d be happy with (I guess it’s all in relation to how I know my life is right now, I mean, I usually make the best out of most situations, so maybe I would be happy?). BUT, if I was to do it all over again differently, I would most definitely not have met Robyn and had Ashton and there is nothing in this world, no amount of fame or fortune I’d trade over them…so I guess no, I’m exactly where I belong.

13. If you won the Olympic Gold Medal – how do you think you would react?

How random is this question??  And when did pop culture trivia become an Olympic sport? 🙂  Gosh, I’d probably cry from being overwhelmed and overjoyed.

14. What do you want for Christmas?

This is the question I have been asked most in the past 48 hours.  Honestly, I am the worst at this because I am THAT person who buys themselves everything they want.  If I want/need something I just get it for myself so when the time comes for xmas or my birthday I have nothing to offer others in terms of suggestions.  I actually love gift cards so I can get more clothes (which clearly won’t help my closet issue.)  A new pair of my favorite running shoes is always a good gift!

15. What skill do you lack?

Oh where do I begin? HA!  I really lack any artistic skill, I really wish I was more creative/artistic.

Question of the day

Answer one of the questions above…and tell me what’s on your agenda for the weekend!

A funny email and my husband thinks I’m a hoarder

Hey friends!  We are half way through the week, isn’t that amazing?? I am now counting down the days until vacation…SO close!!  Anyways, let’s get to chatting shall we?  So, I know I was telling you all how last week was pretty crappy in the workout department but when I got this email from the DailyMile on Monday afternoon I had to laugh, I mean, come on…it was 4 hours from my last workout…how often do they think I should be working out?

I think they need to take a look at their email marketing–I mean, I’d love to be able to work out a few times a day, but it just isn’t feasible!  Anyways…on to more important topics, like how my husband thinks I’m a hoarder.  Seriously, he threw that word around multiple times in reference to me this week.  Let me back up so you get the full picture.

So, on Monday night I was sitting in my closet with clothes strewn all about and I made the mistake of calling my husband into the bedroom to ask him a question.  My question was simple, we have been in our “new” house for just over a year now, and I really want us to put in a closet system like we had in our last house.  You know, those beautiful closet systems with lots of shelves, drawers and sections to hang different kinds of clothing?

Yeah, we had a system in our last house and it was great.  Right now, we have a big walk in closet with one bar on each side and a shelf above (that I can JUST barely reach) each side that runs the length of the closet.  I am not showing you a picture because it truly is a mess.  So, while I am sweating and frustrated from not being able to find the workout top I wanted to run in the next morning, I called to Robyn and told him I wanted to start discussing our closet design.  He looked at me and broke out in laughter telling me that I have a “ton” (his words, not mine) of  space in this walk in closet and he asked why I just can’t stay organized?  I, of course, answered while frantically waving my arms around like a lunatic saying it was because I don’t have any shelves or room to spread my stuff out.  My clothes do not fit in the current layout, they just don’t.  This is where the conversation took a turn.

Robyn started going through all the stuff on my side of the closet telling me what I should throw out.  He has offered many times to organize my closet, but I know that would mean coming home to half of my clothes gone.  I proceeded to justify what was in my closet and then he got me ( a few times).  He reached up overhead and pulled out a pair of roller blades I haven’t used since I was in college, but I just haven’t thrown them away.  I’ve always kept them in case we decided to start rollerblading–it always sounded like a good idea.   I’ll now admit that it sounds ridiculous as I’m typing this and while I never admit it 100% to Robyn,  he’s right.  I have a really, really hard time getting rid of old things. I mean I’m still wearing my instructional soccer t-shirts from when I was five years old!  Oops.  BUT, I have to clarify for you all, I don’t have a lot of stuff,  it’s just I don’t throw the things I do have out. For example, I only have two boxes in our storage area that are from when I was growing up–pictures, etc.  In addition to those two boxes, I have all the clothes in my closet and maybe two other boxes throughout the house of other random things. That’s it!  It’s really not a ton of stuff by any means. The problem is that most of those random things I actually don’t REALLY need,  I’m just holding onto them just in case for some reason I do have a need for them in the future. You know, like that one sweater you’ve never worn but you hold on to just in case there is a day when you need it and you would kick yourself if you got rid of it–please tell me you know what I am talking about!

Anyways, after a Google search over my rollerblades (they aren’t even made anymore,) a lot of laughing and a long conversation of all the things I could get rid of that I never use to make more space in my closet so I could be more organized, we made a deal.  Basically, the deal is that if I can keep my closet as it is currently set up,  organized for one month, Robyn will start discussing the design for the closet I want and put that system in.  For most people, this would sound like a good deal.  However, I’m going to be honest, I always have these grand intentions of cleaning out my closet and keeping it that way.  I do clean it out and re-hang stuff and organize it every few months, but it usually only last a week or so. Usually because I get home from work, I am exhausted and I don’t hang things up properly or  I sloppily throw them somewhere with the intention of doing it later and I never get to it.  This is also why all my workout clothes are piled all over and I keep re-wearing the same things because I wash them and they stay at the top of the pile.

This further proves Robyn’s point that I don’t wear half of my clothes, mainly because I keep re-wearing the stuff that’s clean and on top because it’s easier to find and grab quickly.  However, I am going to try to win this battle of keeping my closet clean and organized for one month.  This means that next week while I’m on vacation, I’m doing a total closet clean out and I’m really going to make an effort to clean out all the things I really haven’t worn the last couple of years and see if I can stick to keeping it all organized for a month so that I can design the closet I want and have him put it in for me.  What do you think, can I do it?

Question of the day

Does anyone else have a hard time getting rid of things?  Ideas for keeping things organized?

Weekly Wrap Up

Hey, hey–Happy Monday!  How was your weekend?  Things here were great, I had a really fun weekend and I am now counting down the days until Thanksgiving week because I have the whole week off for vacation!! So, today is my weekly wrap up, but I am going to warn you all right upfront, it was a pretty terrible week.  We had our sales and marketing meeting which meant full days of training and long nights of social and team building events.  That does not bode well for those of us who like to work out.  So…here is what it looked like!

Week: 11/10-11/16

Monday:  I decided I was going to take the whole week off of running since I knew the S&M meeting would put a wrench in my workouts and I wanted to give my knees a bit more rest.  So, I did T25 total body circuit and 1000m row–I just couldn’t push through to get 2000m in, I was spent but it felt good to be soaked in sweat!

Tuesday: Nada. I went to a CF family night event in NH on Monday evening (it was 2 hours from home) and I didn’t get home until 11 p.m. Some people wouldn’t bat an eye at that, but 11 am is about 90 minutes later than I usually go to sleep!  To top it off, I slept terribly and was up on and off all night and was in tough shape when my alarm went off.  I knew I couldn’t work out since our S&M meeting kicked off at  7 am and I was in sessions straight through until 5:30 and then had an evening event, so needless to say, there was no time to work out.

Wednesday:  Nada. Pretty much the same schedule as Tuesday, sessions all day. I got home late the night before and I was actually starting to feel stabby without my morning workout. I even saw Erin, my spin instructor as she was walking in the building and she was wondering why I was all dressed up and not in my workout clothes…that just added insult to injury!  I ended up bagging on the evening event because I hadn’t seen Ashton since Sunday evening and I just needed some time with him. It was a great decision, he was super sweet and cuddly and it was just what I needed.

Thursday:  I didn’t make it to my regular Thursday morning Vinyasa yoga class and I didn’t teach my Group Power class in the evening but I did manage to sneak in 30 super sweaty minutes on the stair climber for the daily win!  I needed to sweat and it felt so good!

Friday:  I wanted to do the stair climber again but it was taken so I did the PiYo lower body video followed by the upper body video. It wasn’t a super taxing workout, but it felt good to move.

Saturday: I left my house at 9 am and didn’t get back until just after 7 p.m. I had a fun-filled day in Mystic, CT celebrating my niece Gianna’s 16th birthday.  We went with 2 of her friends and my sister-in-law. We went to the aquarium, then went for massages and ended the day at a hibachi restaurant for dinner.

all the girls

It was awesome, and I haven’t laughed so hard in a really long time. Teenage girls are hysterical.  Aside from a good ab workout from laughing, after I got home and put Ashton to bed, I told myself I HAD to do something active.  Robyn left to go to a friend’s house for a guys night so I popped in T25 and did the total body circuit (the hardest of the T25 videos.)  During the workout I questioned why I picked this one, but afterwards I was glad I did it.

Sunday: Does cleaning the house, doing multiple loads of laundry, meal prepping, washing dishes and getting caught up on Sons of Anarchy count?  If not, then, I didn’t workout.  I wanted to do something but during Ashton’s nap I had a lot of things I didn’t get to do during the week, so I got caught up so I could start the new week on a good foot.

Overall, it was a pretty crappy week for workouts.  In addition to not working out like usual, almost all my meals last week were provided to me and I am feeling pretty gross.  The week it’s back to clean eating and bringing my breakfast and lunch to work like usual in the hopes that I can start feeling like myself again.  It’s amazing how 1 week can really impact how you feel.  Wish me luck for getting back to my normal!

It’s a new week…make it count my friends!

Question of the day

How do you deal when life messes up your workout schedule? Does it affect you emotionally too?

My last 10 photos

Hey friends…HAPPY FRIDAY!  Did you all wake up with some of that white stuff on the ground like I did this morning??  I was like, what is going on here??? HA! Can you tell I’m not ready for Winter?  Hell, let’s be honest, I will never be ready for Winter, I really, really dislike the cold weather, but it’s coming so I am just going to suck it up and move on…SO, I am sorry missed you all on Wednesday, we had a big sales and marketing meeting this week which meant long days of meetings and long nights of events so I just didn’t have the time or brain capacity to write anything up.  I am still trying to get caught up from not being able to work most of the week so I thought I would do something a bit different today on the blog.

Yesterday I got an alert that my Dropbox was full (both my phones automatically upload to my Dropbox) so I was curious as to how many pictures I had on my phone and in my Dropbox.  Without embarrassing myself, there were A LOT.  Like many thousands–eek!  I love to take pictures, especially of Ashton and as I was going through my pictures, I was laughing at the randomness of some of them.  So, today, I am going to share with you the last 10 pictures uploaded to my dropbox. Enjoy!

1. Waiting for Daddy to get out of work so Mama can go teach at the gym! He always has to sit in the front seat to wait with me.

2. Robyn made homemade chocolate chip cookies with a PB center that were as big as my hands!  They were delicious–confession…I had more than 1!

3. Ashton is still rocking his Halloween costume in mid-November! #drseussforlife

4. I was wondering why it hurt to stand, this was why!  I had one on BOTH toes…that was a first for me!

5. Ashton watching his cousin play a game on his new phone.

6. Trying to get a picture of Ashton and I cuddled on the couch..he was in such a silly mood…take 1!

7. Take 2!

8. A side view of our new walkway

9. Ashton loving his new steps!  Love=stomping for a toddler!

10.  Ashton loves his talking Elmo and always hugs and kisses him!  It’s so sweet to watch him talk to him.

That’s it for me today folks, I have about 7 hours standing between me and the weekend.  I want you all to have a great day and an even better weekend, okay?  I will see you all on Monday!

Question of the day

Who else takes a ridiculous amount of pictures?  What were your last 10?  Join in!

Weekly Wrap Up

I don’t know why I am always surprised when Monday comes around, I mean…it happens every week, but I always feel like the work week is hard and slow and then the weekend comes along, flying by like at a frantic pace and then we are back in the office ready to do it all again. Am I the only one who feels like this?  Two day weekends are just never enough to get things done, relax and feel ready to come back on Monday!  Thankfully, I have the week of Thanksgiving off, so I will have some extended time off shortly!  So…let’s take a look at last week and see how it went, shall we?

Week: 11/3-11/9

Monday:  I woke up and my knees were really sore, like tender to the touch.  I have no idea why…although I have two potential suspects.  It’s either time to change out my running shoes or it’s because I have been wearing high heels everyday for the last 3 weeks which is something I haven’t done in years.  I tend to think its more the heels than anything, but we will see.  Since I didn’t really think it was my running shoes, I sucked it up for a 3 mile run and 2000 meter row.

Tuesday: My knees were still sore, but not as bad as Monday and I think wearing flats the day before helped a lot too.  I got in  2 miles in the 7’s and finished it off with a 2000 meter row.  I just wasn’t feeling my workout but something is better than nothing!

Wednesday:  A lot of you guys already read about my Wednesday workout, so in the hopes of not getting me annoyed all over again, we can proceed to Thursday!

Thursday:  I did my regular Thursday Vinyasa yoga class and taught Group Power in the evening. I am really loving this new Group Power release, its challenging and so much fun, I am going to be sad when I have to switch it up!

Friday:  My knees were feeling much better so I got in 4 miles while watching Grey’s Anatomy on my phone.  I had an early morning meeting so I had to high tail it to get ready and into my office so I planned to do something in the evening after Ashton went to bed, but that didn’t happen as I ended up working until about 10:30 p.m.  🙁  Oh well!

Saturday: During Ashton’s nap I wanted to work out but didn’t want to do PiYo so I pulled out my T25 again and did the Cardio workout. I forgot how much I loved these workouts, so you can bet you will be seeing them in the mix again! Once I was done, Robyn came home from his appointment and I headed out to pick up my nieces.  It was my oldest niece Gianna’s birthday and she wanted to get her belly button pierced for her birthday.  Her mom said it was okay so that was our gift to her.  I was a bit nervous she was either going to scream or pass out since she was so worked up once we got there but she didn’t even flinch when she got it done. She said she barely felt it!  Thank goodness!  We celebrated her not passing out by hitting up Starbucks on the way home and then the girls watched Ashton so Robyn and I could go out for dinner and a movie.  We haven’t seen a movie in the theater together since I was pregnant with Ashton, I remember because we went and saw Girl with the Dragon Tattoo with some of our friends the weekend it came out, which was in December 2011.  Pretty sad….unfortunately, I picked the movie (Gone Girl) and it was TERRIBLE.  I’ll preface this with the book was GREAT, so I was excited to see how they had it play out in the theater, but the movie was slow and drawn out and I wanted to leave an hour into it.   Oh well, it was still a nice night out with Robyn!

Sunday: I took Sunday as a rest day and it was great!  My friend who is a photographer texted me on Saturday night saying she had a cancellation for a holiday mini-photo session and asked if she could take some pics of Ashton so of course, I jumped at the chance!  So, I took Ashton for a session with her and it was AWESOME!  He was such a ham and cooperated perfectly, so afterwards I took him for a little fun at the toy store and we got another Thomas the Train for his train track.  During his nap I took a long, hot bath while I watched How to Get Away with Murder and then we had a family birthday party for Gianna.  It was a great way to wrap up the weekend!

Overall, it wasn’t a stellar week but I still got in a few decent workouts. I still need to make some adjustments to my workouts but I haven’t had much time to actually sit down and think through it and plan it out.  I have a few ideas of what I want to tackle on my extended vacation in December but I need to get something together for the rest of this month.  I don’t have high hopes for anything great this coming week as we have a huge sales and marketing meeting all week which means early morning meetings and late nights all week!

Question of the day

How do you guys plan out your workouts?  Is is always based on a race/event?  Do you wing it or write it down in advance?

Help me choose a dress!!!

Hi guys!  Happy Friday!  First, I want to thank you all for the sweet comments you left on my last post, and for all the emails and FB messages as well, I appreciate it and love you all!  So, let’s start today off by talking about something fun, shall we?  So, as part of my new job, I have been asked to attend a fancy fundraiser in a few weeks.  While I am really excited to be a part of this fundraiser, I have absolutely nothing to wear to an event with a dress code of cocktail chic. Like, what does that even mean?  Long, short, fancy, business?  Not only do I have no idea what that means, the thought of dropping some serious cash on a dress I will likely have no use for afterwards is just not that appealing to me, and even more so, when the heck do I have time to go shopping for said dress?

Well, that is where Rent the Runway comes in.  Rent the Runway is a site where you can rent premier designer dresses for really affordable prices ($30 and up)  What I love most about it is that you can sort your choices by so many different categories like price, color, occasion, level of formality, body type, etc.  Also, real people who have rented the same dress upload pics of themselves in the dress with reviews so you know things like if it runs large/small, if it’s comfortable, what kind of undergarments you need to wear, you know, important stuff! This is always really helpful to hear from real people rather than just reading a generic description from the site.  What I also love is that when you order a dress to rent, you can choose the length of your rental (4 or 8 days) and they will send you TWO sizes for the same price. For me, this is critical since sizes are never uniform across designers.

After finding out I was selected to attend yesterday afternoon, I quickly got online at Rent the Runway (affiliate link) and started looking around.  Thankfully, there is no shortage of gorgeous dresses  So far, here are my front runners:

PicMonkey Collage dresses

I think I am leaning towards the black lace one even though I really like the blue and gold dress.  It’s funny because both the gold and blue dresses are really sparkly and that is not a style  I am typically drawn to, but they really are beautiful dresses, but I think I may feel more comfortable in the black lace one.  The dress below is actually my favorite one and if we have a wedding to attend in the near future, this IS my dress, it’s so me!  But, I just can’t justify the price ($90 plus shipping) for a fundraiser event because I would actually like to bid on something at the event to raise money for this great cause instead of shelling a lot of money out on a dress that I can’t keep post event!

moon goddess

Okay friends, let me know in the comments what YOU think and don’t forget to have a great weekend!  I’ll see you all on Monday!

Question of the day

Which dress do you think I should choose? Have you ever used RTRW?

A first time for everything–some unproud moments

Over the past 24 hours I have done two things I have never done before, neither I am extremely proud of.  Let’s start with last night.  I had a tough day.  Hell, if I am being honest, I have had a tough few weeks.  I love my new job but it’s freaking killing me right now.  I am drained when I get home.  I spend the days running from one meeting to the next, half the time straining to follow along and then working after Ashton goes to bed because how do you get anything done when you sit in meetings for 8 hours a day?  It all happens at night after 8 p.m.  So, the one part of my day I look forward to all night is picking up Ashton at daycare. I don’t get to see him in the morning so the evening is my time with him.  Robyn does the cooking and dinner clean up so I can play with him, give him  a bath, brush his teeth and then Robyn reads to him while I sit with them.  It’s great and even when I am tired, I look forward to it.

Well, I picked Ashton up from daycare last night and he wanted nothing to do with me.  He told me he didn’t want to go home and after coaxing him out of daycare and getting him in his car seat, he told me he didn’t want me to pick him up from daycare anymore, that he wanted Daddy to pick him up.  When I asked him why, he said “Because I don’t like you Mommy.”  GULP.  I was already frustrated with my day, my long commute and my welcome from him and this shocked me. I took a deep breath and said I am sorry you feel that way but I love you.  We got settled in the car and I asked him if he wanted his book (He likes to listen to Dr. Seuss audio books on the way home) and he said yes, so I put one on and started to drive home.  I tried to ask him about his day like we do every evening and he turned his head away from me, held his hand up to me and told me to stop talking.  Who the heck is this child and where is my sweet boy?  Then out of the blue he said, “Mama, I don’t love you.”  I didn’t think I heard him correctly so I asked him what he said.  He repeated it confidently and then said, “I love Daddy, not you!”  Thankfully it was pitch black outside and in the car because the tears started.  Before I knew it, I was sobbing.  I told him that made me really sad that he felt that way but I loved him.  I couldn’t speak to him for the rest of the ride home–a first for me.  I didn’t want him to see me crying in the front so I turned up his audio book and he proceeded to recite Fox in Sox for me while I drove.  I know this is a phase.  I know a lot of my friends with kids the same age go through similar things, but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t hurt like hell.  I should have handled it differently last night, I shouldn’t have shut down. I should of brushed it off, but I just couldn’t.  I am not proud of the fact that I stayed silent and stewed in the car feeling angry and sorry for myself instead of trying to engage with Ashton, but I just couldn’t. I suppose it’s better than me yelling at him or showing him how upset I was, but I need to get a better handle on this because I am pretty certain this isn’t going to be a one time thing. A true #mommyfail on my part.

love is not proud

Fast forward to this morning and I was looking forward to my spin class. I have talked before about how much I love my Wednesday morning class and instructor Erin.  She is AWESOME and I look forward to her class every week.  Well, she was away this week on vacation and we had a sub.  Now, I will preface this with saying that I know as an instructor myself how hard it is to come into another instructors class, especially with an established group of regular participants and teach.  It’s freaking hard, I get that so I always try to be sensitive to that when a sub walks into one of the classes I take.  Well, this morning the sub walked in to teach spin and I smiled, said hello and after she got her music queued up, she began.  This is where things started going downhill for me.  She blasted her music and didn’t mic up, so you could barely hear her, it didn’t help that she kept her head down too so we couldn’t see her mouth.  Then, she was off beat with the music, so the cadence was off and it felt all wrong.  Her music was terrible (however, this I will give a pass for since everyone has different music tastes) and she didn’t warm us up/stretch us at all.  She kept us at a level 4 for the first few songs and when the music was getting faster which would indicate we should speed up or power through a hill, she had us sit and recover.  Recover from what?  We were all at a really low-level and I hadn’t even broken a sweat.  I told myself to give her more time to find her groove but by the 20 minute mark I was done.  I mentally was fighting with myself to stay through the class but I just couldn’t do it.  I unclipped from my bike, wiped it down and walked out.  I have never walked out of a group fitness class before.  I guess there really is a first time for everything.

I was beyond annoyed.  I was mad that Erin was on vacation (irrational I know) I was mad that our gym had this terrible sub, I mean don’t they test their subs before allowing them to teach?  I am pretty sure that being able to follow a beat is a bare minimum requirement to teach a class with music.  I was mad at the instructor who ruined my favorite class for me, I was mad at myself for not bringing anything other than my spin shoes to the gym with me which meant I couldn’t really get in any other cardio today and I was mad at myself for walking out of this instructors class.  I started my day off on the wrong foot and I was just plain disappointed.  After I got ready for work and had time to cool down I gave myself a little pep talk and told myself that I could let this ruin the rest of my day or I could let it go and start again.  So, I dropped my gym back off at my car, walked to the Starbucks in our building, ordered myself a tall, skinny mocha and vowed to make today a great day.

I have to learn to let things go, something I am not great at but am working really hard to change about myself and this was the first step to doing just that.  So, here’s to making today a better day and being a better, more patient person!

Question of the day

Have you ever walked out of a group fitness class?  How do you deal with frustrating situations?

Weekly Wrap Up

Holy cow, it’s really November!  Where did this year go?  All of a sudden I feel like it snuck up on me and here we are with two months left in 2014!!!  I have another crazy busy week here at work, so in the 15 minutes I have free before my first meeting, here is what last week’s workouts looked like!

Week: 10/27-11/2

Monday: I had another Monday morning of speed work intervals.  I had just downloaded Taylor Swift’s new album and got ready to work.  I did 5 miles and did it in just under 40 minutes, did you hear me??  Under 40 minutes, I have NEVER done that before!  It was 39:54 to be exact, so I barely did it, but it was still a sub 40 and I was SO freaking proud of myself.

Tuesday: I woke up with the intention of doing another 5 miler but when I got on the treadmill, I just wasn’t feeling it, so I did a mile warm up at an 8:45 pace and the did a lifting circuit.  It wasn’t a great workout, I was kind of bummed my body just didn’t feel like running, but a crappy workout is better than no workout at all right?

Wednesday: I had my usual spin class in the morning and it was wonderful.  I look forward to this class all week long, I really wish they would add another morning spin class with Erin (the instructor) she is truly awesome and I am so thankful for this class each week!  I always leave soaked with sweat and on an endorphin high that lasts the rest of the day!

Thursday: I was signed up for my usual morning vinyasa yoga class.  I raced to work in the morning worried I was going to be late, but the instructor called 5 minutes before class was supposed to start and said she wasn’t coming.  WTH?  This isn’t the first time she has done this or was late for class.  I get so pissed when things like this happen because as a fellow instructor, I know at my gym if we pulled this shit (unless it was a dire emergency) we would be fired.  I was so annoyed but I wasn’t going to let it ruin my workout.  I ended up doing a PiYo lower body workout (I have all my workout videos stored on my dropbox so I can access them anywhere) and then worked on some inversion poses afterwards. In the evening, I taught my usual Group Power class to round out my workouts for the day.

Friday: I woke up feeling great and was determined to run.  I queued up Scandal on the ABC app on my phone and ran 5 miles in 43 minutes.  An 8:35 pace felt really challenging after very heavy leg lifting the night before, but it felt great to get it done.  Then in the evening, we went trick or treating.  We walked around for about 90 minutes with Ashton going from house to house and we all had a blast.  Here are some of my favorite pictures from the evening!

ash halloween

He is such a little ham these days and when I tell him to smile for me, he squishes his face together and says cheese!  I freaking love this kid! He really understood what Halloween was about this year and was all about saying “trick or treat” which was awesome!  It was our best Halloween ever, I still can’t stop smiling when I talk about it!

Saturday: We had soccer in the morning with Ashton and I used that running around as my workout for the day, so for all intents and purposes, it was a rest day. I got my haircut during Ashton’s nap…what do you think? I haven’t had bangs in YEARS, but I wanted a change that wasn’t super dramatic but still was enough of a change to notice.

After Ashton woke up, we went on a mission to buy Halloween decorations for the house.  We never were ones to decorate our house for the holiday’s until Ashton came along and so slowly we have been building out decorations for each holiday.  We went to Marshalls, Pier One, Michael’s, Kohl’s and Target and spent about 3 hours going to town.  I think we are officially ready for Halloween next year as we dragged in 5 huge bags of decorations that we got for 50-70% off!  Not too shabby!

Sunday: During Ashton’s nap I did the PiYo Sweat workout and then did some laundry and meal prep for the week.  I love PiYo because it’s enough of a workout to make me feel like I did something, but nothing so crazy that I so tired or sore from for the next few hours, it’s a great low impact, quick burn kind of workout for the weekends.

So, there you have it!  It was a good week of workouts with a decent amount of variety. I am still looking to find the right balance of workouts and want to make some tweaks to my schedule in the next few weeks, I am just thinking through the best way to do it.

Question of the day

How was your weekend?  What did you do for Halloween?  What was the best costume you saw?
